This Sterling Silver NZ Kakapo Parrot Charm is a beautiful example of New Zealand's native flightless parrot, the Kakapo.
The charm consists of a traditional Kakapo charm hanging from a Pandora style bracelet hanger, so can be worn either way. Or you could wear it on a neck chain. So many possibilities!
The Kakapo is the world's only flightless parrot, and one of the longest living birds (120 years). Kakapo are nocturnal and herbivorous. Having evolved on an oceanic island with few predators and abundant food, they became the world's heaviest parrot, and lost the ability to fly. However, Polynesian and European colonisation, with our accompanying predators, have meant that the Kakapo is now critically endangered.
The Kakapo has a variety of calls, including a long, low frequency "booming" by males to attract females. You can hear this on our Kakapo soft toy . The Kakapo has one of the lowest rates of avian reproduction, with breeding only happening in years when forest trees fruit heavily, providing a plentiful food source for these expert climbers.
The Kakapo charm is a lovely reminder of an experience with the Kakapo parrot. The charm measures approximately 1.5cm (1/2") long, and is 3-D.
